In 1986 during the cold war, Jane Parker-Ambrose traveled to Russia in hopes of presenting a three-foot diamond kite featuring the American and Soviet flags on each side of the globe. In Moscow Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space and the president of the Soviet Women’s Peace Committee received this kite as a symbol of efforts worldwide for peace and understanding.

This was the beginning of this annual kite-flying event celebrated not only in Long Beach but all over the globe.

Everyone-young and old, beginners and experienced-is invited to participate at the Bolstad Ave. Beach Approach between 10 am and 4 pm both Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend, October 8 & 9.

There will be kite making and kite flying lessons available for all. Experienced flyers will decorate the sky with large and varied shaped kites for everyone’s fun. Everyone flying kites can sign the worldwide register.

After a humorous jazz story, Milne will turn around and create toe-tapping music.

When the World Kite Museum opened in 2005, one of the exhibits was “Meet Me In St. Louis: The First Kite Competition in the U.S.”. It was a time when kites were flourishing as tools and a time when ragtime and boogie-woogie filled the music halls and dance floors.

Since that opening with Bob Milne, a world-renown jazz pianist, Milne has yearly presented a benefit appearance for the World Kite Museum. His humor and highly energetic playing style keeps all ages entertained.

Jerry Cannon is Mr. Cool in his yellow suit and kite. He has won competitions indoor and outdoor.

Looking for a winter weather entertainment? The Windless Kite Festival is an indoor kite flying show. It’s individuals, duos and more choreographed air routines to music.

Dick Curran generally flies single line kites indoors. This winged box performs when he pulls it up and with graceful glides to the music.

Lee Sedgwick flys a YFO, a single line kite of his creation. Lee is well known for skiing on frozen Lake Erie on kite power.	John Barresi, a kite pilot of 20 years, specializes in quad line kites. He is an instructor and innovator with the iQuad Team.
Scott Davis is the creator and director of this festival. He is also the instigator of the Hot Trick Shoot Out.	Penny Lingenfelter produces Dr. Suess's Cat in the Hat using multiple flyers and folks from the audience. She also is known for her showstopper patriotic solos.

Other Kite Things to do that Weekend

• Take an indoor flying lesson
• Visit the Kite Museum and experience the thrill, art, science and world history of kiting plus make a kite.
• Take time to view indoor flying films.
• Join the jolly local and participant groups for the Italian Potluck, Raffle and Award Ceremony Evening. Admission is a dish to pass and something for the raffle.

This February 4th & 5th opening has special events to introduce this Bali Kite Exhibit. The exhibit lasts until March 25.

Special Opening Events

At night during the festival the families are entertained by shadow puppet shows. These two opening days the Paper Eclipse Puppet Company will present a special show about bats. Fruit bats, bat kites, and bats as good luck are native to Bali. This show about the only mammal that flies will include amazing information and a healthy dose of humor for all ages.

Kite Making

Everyone can make a simple kite of everyday materials, which has delighted Southeast Asians for thousands of years. You can decorate them and if the winds are right, fly them in the Museum’s front yard.

The Bali International Kite Festival

Imagine 209 teams of a dozen or more members, most with their own gamelan orchestras, with no team allowed to compete with a kite less than 132 “ wide. Put them together in rice fields or beaches larger than football fields to be judged and you have the July Lomba Layang-Layang Internasional Bali.

To accompany the large kites there will be enlarged photos of them being transported to the flying fields, kite launching and flying. Signage will explain things in detail.

Videos of using kites both to catch bats and fish will be showing regularly.

Your admission includes seeing the whole museum.
