Asian New Year Celebration
January 31– February 12
This Saturday and Sunday, February 1st and 2nd, is the opening celebration for the 2014 Year of the Horse. Special events during these days include block printing, Japanese Koto music plus antique women’s kimonos, making a traditional kite and children’s stories.
The exhibit enhancement will continue through the month of February. Part of it will show the giant kite culture of approximately nine different communities. To give you a sense of the size of these kites, some need over 100 men to launch them and often 2 ½ gallons of glue are used to hold them together.
Folding origami cranes for good luck, making kites, symbols of kite decoration and a special section on the last Edo kite maker in Tokyo will continue after the opening weekend.
